I love collecting toilet signs. Cute ones, clever ones, unusual ones…
It’s become a little obsession of mine. Here are some I’ve collected with a place and story if I can remember. First up are some from my home country, South Africa.
As you might expect, animals are a common motif.
These painted owls come from the Dullstroom Bird of Prey and Rehabilitation Centre.
It’s well worth the visit if you’re ever in the area.
The Sudwala Caves in Mpumalanga have cute Flintstonesque toilet signs.
These caves have a long and exciting history. Shorter tours provide a taste of the incredible cave formations while the longer Crystal Tour holds deeper explorations for the more adventurous and agile spelunker.
The best way to view game is on a houseboat drifting down the Olifants River.
Kambaku has these beautifully sculpted toilet signs.
These Victorian-styled toilet signs are perfect for the Royal Hotel Church Bar in Pilgrim’s Rest. The bar started life as a chapel, and it is a quaint and quirky place to enjoy a beer and meet a variety of people.
I can’t remember exactly where this picture was taken
other than somewhere in Nelspruit. I like the wig on the women’s head!
Alzu is the perfect place to stop for petrol. Whenever we’re heading from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park, this is where we stretch our legs and grab a quick bite.
The gold rush may have started in Pilgrim’s Rest but Johannesburg is known as Egoli (the place of gold) for a reason. A stop at Gold Reef City includes a casino, amusement park, and museum rolled into one. These toilet signs come from the Casino.
This adorable sign is from the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg. A visit to this centre is always so much fun since experiential learning is a foundation of the centre. You can run around learning through play and having a blast.
It’s fun for people of all ages.
These are simply an “m” for men and a “w” for women.
These wooden cutouts are from The Grassroof in Port Elizabeth: a farm stall, restaurant, and bakery. We’ve enjoyed delicious meals at the restaurant but the bakery really takes the cake with some delicious offerings.
Last in this post are the womanly trousers on this toilet sign.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these toilet signs as much I do.
There’s more to come and more to find!
